After a less than ideal night sleep we loaded up and cruised down the trail. We needed to be in Ohiopyle by 2:00 some 40 miles from camp. Why Ohiopyle? Because we had tour reservations at Fallingwater. Yes the Frank Lloyd Wright house. Jason owns a structural concrete company and is a civil engineer as well. We were both excited to see this American treasure.
Our big lunch of sub sandwiches from a local shop along the trail did not help us move swiftly but we did make it to Ohiopyle on time. We had a shuttle to take us up to the house since the road was steep, narrow, winding, and heavily trafficked. Everything we had read or heard told us not to try to ride it. They were right. The over priced shuttle service was the way to go.
The house is more unassuming than I expected at first glance. The tour guide was fantastic and had great information. There were lots of interesting design choices for Jason and I to discuss. More importantly as a contractor and an inspector we had lots to say about the build quality. Having been built in the late 1930s it was well built but there are a few things I would have done differently.
After the tour we took a walk and saw the house from across the creek and the magnitude of the design really hits you. If only there was more water to see in the falls.
