Gear – 3 Golf Setup

Today I sent my golf clubs forward. Am I done golfing on this trip? No! But I am done with golf for the next 800 plus miles. These will be on the Great divide Mountain Bike Route and the focus will be on bike packing not golf.

So before boxing up my clubs and shipping them forward I snapped a few pics for this weeks gear review.

I have been thinking about how to golf in this trip for years now. At first I thought I would need a trailer. Then I thought maybe a cargo bike. Then I found the Q-club.

It is and adjustable iron. The head rotates from a lob wedge through putter. Or so they say. I have found the practical range to be lob through 6 iron. It is well made and does not feel like it was bought from SkyMall. They really took a concept that in the past has been a gimmick and made it a precision novelty. I have no idea why someone would need one of these. But it is making golf possible for me and I have continued to get better with it.

I carry three clubs. Driver, putter, and the adjustable iron. The driver has a removable head making it easier to pack. The putter seemed worth the weight since technically you should use it for half of your shots.

So how do I carry them? I think you have seen pictures of my fully packed bike setup and know the left pannier is my club set up. I sewed the bag myself. It functions as both the pannier on the bike and my carry bag on the course.

The general concept is the clubs slide into a holder that keeps them separated and padded. This goes head down into the bag, the side laces cinch the bag down tight, and a cap slides over the grips to keep it all tidy. To further slim the package down the storage pocket is removed and goes in after the clubs.

The clubs ready to be placed in receiver.
Clubs and driver shaft held in receiver.
Driver head goes into its own pocket.
Flaps wrap around the club heads and Velcro in place holding everything tight.
All components ready to be packed.
Loaded
Ready to be placed on bike rack.
I purchased spare hardware from the rack manufacturer to put on this bag. It utilizes the tight clamping action this rack system is known for.
Storage bag for balls, glove, keys, etc.
The flap slides into a sleeve on the main bag and Velcros in place.
Ready to go hit the links.

Gear of the week – Golf Set Up

This set up has performed great for 1000 miles and 8 different courses. The durability has been great. The 5.5 lbs it adds is not ultralight by any means but for a full golf rig it is pretty light.

It has also been a big part of my experience in town and has proven to be a conversation starter both on and off the course.
